Module 1 · Simulated worlds · Lesson 2
Building user simulators
Design the second model in the loop, a simulated user with a persona, a hidden goal, limited knowledge and a stop rule, and drive it turn by turn against a headless agent, including dual-control tasks and deliberately difficult users.
By the end of this lesson you can
- Write a simulator prompt that separates what the user wants, knows and will reveal, with an explicit stop token
- Implement a conversation driver that alternates simulator and agent turns with session resumption and a turn budget
- Give the simulated user its own tools for dual-control tasks, and explain why dual control lowers agent success
- Add non-collaborative behaviours while holding the goal fixed, and measure their effect on pass^k
- Estimate the model-call budget of a simulated benchmark and decide where each model should run
