Module 1 · Human judgement at scale · Lesson 1
Designing human evaluations
Decide who rates, what they are asked and in what format, write a guideline that different people apply the same way, and price a study before you run it.
By the end of this lesson you can
- Choose between binary verdicts, rating scales, pairwise comparison and best–worst scaling for a question, and justify the choice with the evidence on reliability and cost
- Choose a rater pool for a question and name its failure modes, including raters' own use of LLMs
- Write a guideline with definitions, boundary examples and a "can't tell" option, pilot it with overlapping raters, and revise it from the disagreements
- Estimate a study's person-hours, cost and calendar time from items, raters per item, seconds per judgement and overlap
- Report a human evaluation in enough detail for someone else to reproduce it
