Module 1 · How agents remember · Lesson 3
Files, skills and memory tools
Memory that outlives the session as files. CLAUDE.md and auto memory in Claude Code, skills as procedural memory, the Claude memory tool you host yourself, and Managed Agents memory stores with versions and read-only mounts.
By the end of this lesson you can
- Explain how Claude Code loads CLAUDE.md, rules and auto memory, and decide what belongs in each
- Treat skills as procedural memory, and compute what progressive disclosure and post-compaction re-attachment cost in tokens
- Implement a memory-tool handler that maps /memories to per-case storage and rejects path traversal
- Configure Managed Agents memory stores with the right access mode, and use versions and redaction for audit and erasure
- Choose between CLAUDE.md, skills, the memory tool and memory stores for a given piece of knowledge
